What is Finger Expansion Joint
Finger type bridge expansion joints are suitable for use under heavy traffic, and mainly applied to the device with 20-320mm expansion. Their special doweled connection system makes them particularly useful where the impact on the main structure should be minimised. The system is designed on a modular basis, allowing individual finger plates to be quickly replaced as required. Finger type joints are still specified on many bridge projects due to proven long-term structural performance. These joint systems are also convenient to install on bridge rehabilitation projects requiring a shallow joint depth and/or staged construction.

The rubber is made of chloroprene rubber (CR, suitable for temperatures between -25℃ and +60℃) or natural rubber (NR, suitable for temperatures between -40℃ and +60℃).
The steel plate used in the expansion device must meet the requirements of GB012 and GB374. The bridge expansion device is made of integral hot-rolled 16Mn special-shaped steel.
Shallow buried comb plate expansion joints
Due to the limitation of transportation length, the shallow buried comb plate expansion joints can be manufactured in sections and spliced on site. The expansion joints stored on the construction site should be placed in parallel and not cross-stacked to prevent deformation.
When leaving the factory, the connection fixtures are only designed for transportation convenience, and the gap is not a fixed position; when installing the shallow buried comb plate expansion joints, it needs to be approved by the supervision engineer. If there are regulations in the design documents, follow the regulations in the bridge design documents and do not change them at will.
1. Locate and cut asphalt concrete, and loft according to the width. Note that it is asymmetrically cut along the center line of the beam joint on the left and right. Keep the size in mind and don’t make mistakes.
2. When excavating, it is necessary to clean up the debris, and the excavation depth should at least reach the value, and do not exceed the requirements.
3. Positioning with fixed bolts
Use the bolt hole combination template to lay out and position, and the screw position error is 1mm; when drilling holes, the structure inside the beam body, such as prestressed pipes, steel bars, etc., shall not be involved.
4. Tie the transition bottom steel grid, set up the template, and pour C40 steel fiber concrete; the top surface elevation and flatness must be strictly controlled, consistent with the longitudinal and mold slopes of the bridge deck, and its flatness should be 0-1mm (mm).
5. Tie the distribution steel bars in the transition section.
6. Pour C40 steel fiber concrete in the transition section.
7. Install the waterproof neoprene sheet, stainless steel plate and toothed plate, and tighten them with nuts; to prevent the screw and nut from loosening, anti-loosening glue must be applied to the thread, and the screw and nut surface must be fixed with a small amount of spot welding, and finally the screw hole is filled with waterproof and anti-loosening epoxy resin.
8. Concrete watering and curing, anti-freezing and moisturizing curing in winter.
9. Waterproof paste is poured into the toothed joint
Generally speaking, the expansion joint of the bridge is required to be able to expand and contract freely in both directions parallel and perpendicular to the axis of the bridge, firm and reliable, and the vehicle should be smooth, without sudden jumps and noise when passing by; it should be able to prevent rainwater and garbage soil from infiltrating and blocking; installation, inspection, maintenance, and removal of dirt should be simple and convenient.
