What is Modular bridge Expansion Joints
Modular Bridge expansion joint: refers to the expansion joint usually set between the two beam ends, between the beam end and the abutment, or at the hinged position of the bridge to meet the requirements of bridge deck deformation. The expansion joint is required to be able to freely expand and contract in both directions parallel and perpendicular to the bridge axis, and to be firm and reliable. When vehicles pass through, they should be smooth, without sudden jumps and noise; they should be able to prevent rainwater and garbage and soil from infiltrating and blocking; installation, inspection, maintenance, and removal of dirt should be simple and convenient. At the expansion joint, the railing and the bridge deck pavement should be disconnected.
The function of the modular bridge expansion joint: to adjust the displacement and connection between the superstructure caused by vehicle loads and bridge construction materials. Once the expansion device of the skew bridge is damaged, it will seriously affect the speed, comfort and safety of driving, and even cause driving safety accidents.When the expansion and contraction deformation of the bridge exceeds 50mm, steel expansion devices are often used.

- Installation method
The rubber is made of chloroprene rubber (CR, suitable for temperatures between -25℃ and +60℃) or natural rubber (NR, suitable for temperatures between -40℃ and +60℃).
The steel plate used in the expansion device must meet the requirements of GB012 and GB374. The bridge expansion device is made of integral hot-rolled 16Mn special-shaped steel.
a. During installation, determine the installation width value according to the actual temperature.
b. During the installation process of the expansion joint, the expansion joint device must be arranged neatly and maintain a certain inclination. Ensure that the highest plane of the expansion joint is level with the completed bridge deck.
c. Construction method
① Clean the notch to reach the designed width and depth, remove the steel bars that interfere with the buried displacement box, and the opening of the reserved pit must be larger than the installation width of the expansion joint.
② Check whether the gap between the beams of the expansion device meets the installation temperature requirements. Otherwise, use a horizontal jack and clamp to adjust it until it meets the design requirements. After adjustment, immediately install the special clamp.
③ Set the lifting device according to the center position of the expansion joint, install the expansion device in the notch, and make the top surface of the expansion device the same as the bridge deck elevation. At the same time, pay attention to the longitudinal and transverse slopes should also be consistent with the bridge deck.
④ After the expansion device is hoisted into the reserved slot, its center line should be aligned with the center line of the reserved gap at the beam end, and its length should be aligned with the width of the bridge.
⑤ Adjust the straight section of the telescopic device and make the gaps of each longitudinal beam uniform.
⑥ Then weld Ф16 or above steel bars at the telescopic device box or anchor plate for height positioning, and weld Ф16 steel bars horizontally for width positioning.
⑦ After the telescopic device is correctly anchored, the anchor steel bars on one side of the telescopic device and the reserved steel bars in the reserved groove can be welded to ensure that the telescopic device is fixed and leveled linearly. When welding, just weld one every 2 to 3 anchor bars, and then weld the anchor bars on the other side according to the above steps. After both sides are fixed, the remaining welded anchor bars can be welded again to ensure reliable anchoring. When welding anchor bars, be careful not to weld arbitrarily on the side beams and middle beams to prevent the steel beams from twisting and deforming.
⑧ If the telescopic device is installed in sections, the joints must be welded. The welding should be performed by professionals. After each beam is welded, it should be anchored according to step ⑦.
⑨ Make a template according to the size of the joint and the reserved notch. After the template is placed, it should be covered tightly to prevent the mortar from flowing into the displacement box. A cover plate should be added to the flat surface of the expansion joint to prevent the mortar from falling into the rubber sealing belt. After checking the correct flatness and centerline position of the device and whether the gap meets the requirements, concrete can be poured in and fully vibrated and compacted. In particular, it should be noted that there should be no voids between the displacement box and the reserved pit base. After the concrete solidifies, remove the template and the fixing card on the expansion joint.
⑩ Before the concrete at the expansion joint reaches 80% of its strength, the expansion joint cannot withstand external loads.
End waterproofing
To prevent the accumulated water in the rubber sealing belt from flowing to the pier, a head can be set at both ends of the expansion joint device. The head of the expansion joint device can be designed in different styles (height and angle) according to different road surfaces. The head is generally placed inside the crash wall.
